The GUI is very useful, because it represents your filesystem visually as a color coded cluster map. The console is another option for those that prefer the command line. It is also allows you to run UltraDefrag from the task scheduler and scripts. Finally, the native executable will run at boot time in a manner similar to chkdsk. The design of UltraDefrag is very simple. There are no skins and other unnecessary stuff. It is a small and powerful program!

In order to start using it, just extract the contents of the ZIP archive to any folder you like, and run it. WinContig is released as freeware for personal and commercial use. WinContig is an application designed for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista operating systems.

PageDefrag uses advanced techniques to provide you what commercial defragmenters cannot: the ability for you to see how fragmented your paging files and Registry hives are, and to defragment them. In addition, it defragments event log files and Windows 2000/XP hibernation files (where system memory is saved when you hibernate a laptop).PageDefrag works on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Server 2003.

Be aware also that if you use Windows, you already have a defragmentation tool installed; Windows comes with a somewhat slow but functional defragmentation utility. The information provided on this page comes without any warranty whatsoever. Use it at your own risk.

I tried a couple of the free tools as an alternative to the Vista inbuilt program and finally chose Diskeeper 08 as it seemed to work really well. Automatic like Vista but with a great interface and resource friendly.
